Dear Mum and Dad,
I had another good day at the cricket last Saturday. I made 30 runs (Not Out!) with three 6’s sixes and two 4’s. I opened the bowling again but did not get a wicket this week. Before the game the opposition ran round the pitch to warm up like we used to do back home. There is a person in this cricket team called Mal. His nickname is Strokey and he had a very eventful day. You would not believe how bad the fielding is. Most of the team can not throw a ball more than 20 metres. Strokey was on the boundary and attempted to throw the ball back to the keeper but somehow got his limbs all tangled up and managed to throw the ball backwards over the line for a 4. The whole team and the opposition fell about laughing. We all had tears in our eyes. It was so funny.
Our team fielded first and thanks to my controlled bowling we kept the opposition down to just 130 runs in 40 overs. When it was time to bat I did not get my chance until we were 4 down with 70 runs on the board. I have learnt that this used to be a difficult time before I arrived at the club. There are stories of many batting collapses from previous games when we have been in a similar position. The team are very pleased that I can bat and offer a solid middle order. We won easily thanks to me.
After the game we had a BBQ. It was just like the food Dad used to do in the back yard at home! Finally there was a pub quiz and we came 5th after some cheating from the other teams.
The beer is very strong here compared to back home in New Zealand so most of the time I have a shandy and limit myself to one pint.
We are off on tour soon to Portugal. I am hoping to make my 1st century whilst we are away. I will send you a postcard and tell you all about it!
Love, your son,
Brian x
P.S. Kylie sends her love.
